Plant-based Products for a Clean, Pet-friendly, and Environmentally Conscious Home

I vividly recall the scents that defined their childhood. The smells I remember most are of a pungent white vinegar, the citrus from Murphy’s oil soap, and cinnamon - when the house was done cleaning a pot of water with three cinnamon sticks went on the stove and filled the house. Those aromas lingered through my adolescence and bring memories of chores, but more importantly, what it means to keep a home. But let's be honest, cleaning products used many years ago, and still being used today, are loaded with unpleasant smells and toxic chemicals that are harmful to us and our pets. Natural products have been slowly introduced over the years. It has only been within the last few years that the marketplace is flooded with unique plant-based, biodegradable, non-toxic ingredients that are less harmful to the earth.

I have always been open to trying new products, but I often avoided natural cleaners. Products that fell into the earth-friendly category did not meet my expectations for achieving a level of cleanliness that was satisfactory. I recall when I just moved to a new city and rented a place with two roommates– we were all in our late 20’s. One did not know how to clean correctly, and the other was very clean but refused anything harmful to the environment. It was the day I moved in and noticed that the bathroom we all shared had build-up on the shower door and mold growing in the corner. I asked the “earth goddess” roommate where the cleansers were kept to scrub the shower. She said she just cleaned the bathroom but that I could take a shot at it. I was handed a bottle of what appeared to be a watered-down lemonade with a hint of vinegar and a scrub brush. After 30 minutes of scrubbing, I realized that this person was doing all the hard work but with the wrong tools.

After being completely frustrated, I walked out of the bathroom and told her that I would buy something with chemicals that this just was not working. I came back from the store, walked into the bathroom, and emerged 20 minutes later smelling of bleach and ammonia. That bathroom was rid of anything that had been growing in there; anything that could have a chance at life had been sterilized.

While I have a deep appreciation for a cleanser that packs a punch, what continues to be on grocery store shelves is not great for our bodies, environment, or pets. We are responsible for all living things, great and small, and it is as important to me to have a healthy environment as it is a clean household. When selecting products, we have a responsibility to choose products for our well-being and beyond. We must think about how products exit our home into the world. How do they affect the health of our environment, oceans, air, animals, ecosystems, and habitats? Fortunately, the demand for eco-friendly products has created a marketplace that provides variety. In this sea of options, I wanted to share with you a list of products that I like and help me keep a clean, healthy, and happy home for my little beasts and me:

Honest Disinfecting Spray

  • This replaced most cleaning products in my home. I use it in my house to clean non-porous surfaces like countertops, showers, sinks, toilets, and door handles. It cleans, deodorizes, disinfects, and kills 99%* of germs, making it great for cleaning up after a pet. It is fragrance-free, and you don't have to worry about bleach spots on your clothes.

Ingredients: water, hydrogen peroxide, surfactant blend, citric acid, and alkylbenzene sulfonic acid.

Wipes_Cleaner.jpg

Better Life Naturally Filth-Fighting Cleaning Wipes

  • When I do a daily refresh on the kitchen or bathroom, these are my go-to. They are great for quick clean-up when your pet leaves paw prints behind. Made chiefly of plant-based products, and the scent is fresh but not overwhelming.

Ingredients: purified water, decyl glucoside, lauryl glucoside, disodium cocoyl glutamate, quillaja saponaria bark extract, salvia sclarea extract, citrus lemon peel extract, citrus Aurantium Dulcis peel extract, methylisothiazolinone (less than 0.01%).

Method Daily Wood Cleaner

  • I discovered this when I had my house in the mountains. This works great on kitchen cabinets, wood paneling, and furniture. It does not leave a residue but conditions the wood and provides a pleasant scent of almond.

Ingredients: water, sodium bicarbonate, propanediol, methylisothiazolinone, fatty alcohol alkoxylate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, benzaldehyde fragrance, dipropylene glycol, ethylene brassylate, decyl glucoside, cocamidopropylamine oxide, and aloe vera gel.

AuntFannies_Cleaner.jpg

Aunt Fannies Mirror & Windows

  • The job I hate the most, but it has the most impact on making your house sparkle - clean mirrors, and windows. This product makes the job more enjoyable. Use it on a pet’s dish holder and appliances too!

Ingredients: Distilled White Vinegar, Sugar Surfactant (Caprylyl/Myristyl Glucoside), Polyglyceryl-6 Caprylate, Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate, Rosemary Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Peppermint Oil, Orange Peel Oil, Lavandin Oil.

Bronners_Cleaner.jpg

Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds Biodegradable Cleaner

  • This has so many uses and is genuinely all-purpose -detergent for dishes, laundry, anything really. What I love this for is washing my pet’s towels and blankets. You know that odor that permeates everything – this helps to solve that issue.

Ingredients: Water, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Coco-Betaine, Decyl Glucoside, Abies Siberica (Siberian Fir) Needle Oil, Picea Glauca (Spruce) Leaf Oil, Citric Acid, Sodium Sulfate, Sodium Chloride, Potassium Hydroxide.

Ecosnext_Cleaner.jpg

ECOSNEXT Laundry Detergent

  • This my choice in laundry detergent, and if you or your pet have skin allergies, this is probably your top pick too! It comes in a sheet, so you don't have to be concerned about liquids spilling. It is hypoallergenic and fragrance-free (but there are fragrance options).

Ingredients: Kaolin, Water, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Silica, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Sodium Citrate, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Cocamidopropylamine Oxide, Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Natural Fragrance, Triethyl Citrate, Protease Blend, Citric Acid, Dimethicone, Linalool, Coumarin.

DishSoap_Cleaner.jpg

Seventh Generation Dish Detergents

  • Whether it is a liquid soap for pots and pans or a detergent pack for the dishwasher, this is a must in our house. While ingredients vary, this brand offers various scents and free & clear plant-based, biodegradable options, making cleaning your pet’s food and water bowls earth-friendly.

Ingredients vary by selection.

SunEarth_Cleaner.jpg

Sun & Earth Multi-Use Floor Cleaner

  • When I lived on the coast, I went to the beach every day. My floors would be covered in sand from the dogs and me. Each time the floors had to be swept and mopped otherwise, it would have looked like that beach house on Friends. It was a small price for a lot of enjoyment. This product goes on easy and leaves the floors feeling fresh.

Ingredients: water, vinegar, alcohol, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside, Xanthan Gum, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Sodium Chloride, Lime Terpenes, Limonene, 2-(4-methylcyclohex-3-en-1-yl)propane-2-ol, 2,6-Dimethyl-7-Octen-2-ol, BHT, T-Butyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Hydroxide, Denatonium Benzoate.

Since you are now down the rabbit hole looking at cleaning products, I want to recommend a few others that are technically household products:

Trash_Cleaner.jpg

Green Earth Compostable Tall Kitchen Bags

  • In my house, we recycle regardless of how inconvenient it is because we know better. As we think about how everything that leaves our home in a garbage bag winds up in a landfill underground, I get a little ill thinking about all of the plastics we use. That is why we use compostable garbage bags.

Ingredients: According to their site, what they leave behind is nutrient-rich humus, water, and CO2.

WoolBalls_Cleaner.jpg

KANTOR Wool Dryer Balls

  • One time, I found my dog choking on a dryer sheet that fell out of the laundry basket. I was terrified and since switched to wool dryer balls. They are natural, chemical-free, and large enough that a small dog will not choke on them. The worst that happens now is that they use it as a toy. They do an excellent job of softening laundry, reducing wrinkles and static cling, and reducing lint and pet hair! Best yet, they last up to five years and reduce landfill waste.

Ingredients: Wool
